Thigh Liposuction

Introduction to Liposuction on Thighs

Thigh liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic procedures to have done, along with stomach liposuction. Many people find that after being on a weight loss programme and slimming down considerably, the lower half of the body retains some excess weight. The most difficult areas to reduce fatty deposits from are the abdomen and legs, which is why these are the most popular areas for liposuction. Some people may find that they have built muscle up on their legs and yet not lost any fat, resulting in larger looking legs. Liposuction deals with the fat cells directly, permanently removing them and giving a more toned and sculpted look.

If you are unhappy with your body shape and feel you have done everything to lose weight, your next step is to talk to your GP. They will be able to advise you not only of what your target weight should be, but also of various factors that may be causing the excess weight. You can discuss liposuction with your GP and they will be able to recommend a local clinic if you choose to go down that route.

Liposuction can now be performed under local anaesthetic, making it quicker and easier than ever before. Most liposuction procedures can be done within the day so there is no need to stay overnight, and the recovery time has been greatly reduced so you may be able to return to normal daily activities in as little as 3 days. Liposuction is carried out using an instrument called a cannula, which is a narrow tube attached to a vacuum device. With tumescent liposuction, which is one of the most popular methods used today, tiny incisions are made on the skin through which the cannula can be introduced. It will then create small tunnels in the layer of fat under the skin, making it easier to remove the fat cells accurately. A tumescent solution is injected before this procedure to numb the area and slightly swell the fat cells making them easier to identify and target. Another form of liposuction uses ultrasonic waves to disturb the fat cells, causing them to liquefy so that they are either suctioned out or reabsorbed by the body to be disposed of naturally.

For thigh liposuction, incisions will be made in or near the crease of the buttock, so visible scarring is minimised. It is important to discuss with your surgeon exactly what you want from this procedure and to have realistic expectations – thigh liposuction can not reduce cellulite, it can only reduce the amount of fat cells in that area.

Recovery and Costs

Recovery time for liposuction on thigh is quick – most patients feel they are able to return to work within a week. A supportive bandage must be worn for at least the first week, and you must be careful not to take part in any strenuous exercise for a while.

Thigh liposuction can cost upwards of £2000 depending on the individual. It is always best to look around and find a clinic that you are happy and comfortable with.
