Neck Liposuction

What is Neck Lift Liposuction?

Neck liposuction or Neck Lift is a procedure used to remove fat from beneath the chin. It is successfully used to minimize the look of a double chin or jowls.Neck lift is usually the most effective way of removing fat from the chin and jowls, giving a more defined jawline and reducing the appearance of a double chin. Liposuction involves fewer scars, has a quick recovery time and generally gives a more natural appearance when compared to the results of a facelift. It also uses local anaesthetic as opposed to a general one, which can cause side effects and complications. Neck liposuction can be combined with other facial treatments such as a chemical peel or laser resurfacing to give a more pleasing look, and this is often chosen by older women. Younger women with more elasticity can usually just opt for the liposuction. Men often prefer to choose liposuction for the aforementioned benefits and because it is a less obvious procedure than having a facelift but with similar results. Face and neck liposuction isn’t always best for everyone – people with excess skin and little or no fatty deposits around the neck and jaw will find that a facelift gives better results.

How is Neck Lipo performed?

Neck liposuction can be performed under local anaesthetic and lasts around an hour. Tiny incisions are made around the jawline through which a slender hollow tube called a cannula can be introduced. This will create small tunnels in the layer of fat cells making them easier to break down and remove via suction. Usually, the incisions are so small that stitches are not needed to seal them once the procedure has been completed. Instead, absorptive pads are applied. The open incisions allow drainage of the solution used during the procedure and effectively minimises the appearance of bruising and swelling. A supportive garment is applied to the area and must be worn for at least the first 24 hours after the surgery. Once the draining process has ceased, the pads and support garment may be removed, although some surgeons recommend continued use of the garment in the evening for a little while longer.

Aftercare and Suitability

After the procedure, you must be careful not to partake in any strenuous activities which may impact the surgery. For this reason, continued use of a support garment is recommended. The neck and face may feel tender and appear swollen for up to 2 weeks after the procedure, and painkillers may be offered to combat this. There will also be a significant amount of bruising, especially as the skin around the neck is so tender and unused to trauma. Because of these side effects, it may take a while to fully appreciate the extent of the surgery, but the vast majority of patients are overall pleased with the results. Suitability for neck liposuction is down to the individual – it is always recommended that you try alternatives before resorting to surgery, such as facial exercises. Also, a double chin is more likely to appear if your overall body weight is in excess. Therefore, a weight loss programme may be a far cheaper and largely healthier route to take.
