Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction surgery is nowadays one of the most common and popular methods of cosmetic surgery for both men and women. Liposuction, also known as liposculpture and lipoplasty, is a surgical procedure that can remove small areas of fat that you haven't been able to shift with diet and exercise. Liposuction surgery is not a treatment for weight control or obesity, and it cannot remove cellulite or stretch marks.

Liposuction surgery can be done on your abdomen, stomach, hips, thighs, buttocks, knees, ankles, upper arms, neck and sides. Men most often choose to undergo liposuction surgery to remove fat from the stomach and the chest. Depending on the area to be treated, liposuction surgery can last anywhere from 90 minutes up to 3 hours. All patients must attend a free obligatory consultation with their surgeon to ensure all details of the procedure are fully explained. During the consultation period, your surgeon will discuss the various techniques and propose a suitable form of surgery for you.

Of course, there is a limit to the amount of fat that can be safely removed from an area, so it may not be possible to reduce an area as much as you might like. Following fat removal surgery, your body won't replace the fat cells, so you should have a long-lasting change in your body shape, especially if you exercise, eat a healthy diet, and maintain a healthy weight after your operation.

Liposuction surgery can be fairly invasive, therefore it is generally performed under general anaesthesia, however, it can also be carried out under local anaesthesia. The procedure starts with the surgeon making a small incision in the treatment area. The incisions will be carefully placed in the most inconspicuous of places so that the scarring is hardly visible. Through the tiny incision, a small hollow tube known as a cannula is inserted and used to vacuum the fatty cells that lie deep beneath the skin. A certain amount of physical force is then used to push and pull the cannula through the fat layer in order to break it apart. While the cannula is breaks apart the fatty cells it simultaneously suctions out the fat through a vacuum or large syringe. Saline solution and local anaesthetic are normally introduced to help the breakdown of stubborn fatty cells.

Depending on the area covered and the amount of fat removed, liposuction can either be treated as a day case of an overnight stay. As the operation is considered a fairly invasive form of cosmetic surgery a full two weeks rest period is recommended. What’s more, strenuous activities should not be attempted for up to three weeks, or until all the pain and discomfort have subsided. Following liposuction surgery, patients can expect a certain amount of swelling and bruising to remain for at least two weeks, therefore, patients should not expect to see any results within that time frame as the body returns to its normal shape and size. The scars will start to fade immediately and should become virtually undetectable over time.
