Double chin or sagging chin can be a major concern for people who have them. It affects both men and women and can lead to a low self-esteem. It is usually caused by and are more common to people who are overweight, as well as aging. However, even with people who are not particularly overweight, fat accumulates easily below the jawline for some. Unlike other body fat, double chin is hard to get rid of, even with the help of facial exercises; which only tones the skin, but won't remove fats, as fat is not a muscle.
There are a couple of ways of treating, preventing and reducing double chin - from chewing gums so as to increase activity in the jawline, to avoid fat concentration, to double-chin gels and lotions. However, its effectiveness are not known and there is no medical evidence showing any cream that is capable of removing double chin either. Whereas, liposuction actually physically removes the excessive build up of fats from under the chin, and also takes away the saggy skin around it. Which is why, liposuction is now a popular choice amongst individuals with pronounced double-chin.
What does double chin lipo involve?
Today, with the improvement of microcannular liposuction tehcnology, liposuction has become very effective and popular. The cannula, or tubular surgical instrument, has been reduced in size now and as a result the incisions are much smaller. If you are considering liposuction for your double chin, be well-informed about what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. Be wary of the risks and complications that can arise, as with all cosmetic surgery.
The procedure starts with an administration of a local anesthesia. Then the surgeon will make tiny incisions in your skin to insert a small, tube-like stainless steel instrument called a cannula. The cannula is then pushed and pull, back and forth to loosen the fat cells, and the unwanted fat deposits beneath the skin are suctioned or vacuumed away. With liposuction you will experience a lesser bleeding and the skin tissues will suffer lesser trauma compared to the earlier liposuction procedures.
After-surgery and recovery
Since general anaesthetic is not used, recovery is very rapid. There is minimal to moderate swelling and bruising, which rapidly subsides. Scarring is minimal and is almost invisible; and in some cases, the incisions do not leave any scars at all. After the surgery, a special compression bandage is worn for a few days; to provide little gentle pressure and to hold the incision and treated area firmly in place. After which, no special care is required. Most patients can get back to work within a week.
