What is Chin Liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes fat from beneath the surface of the skin using keyhole surgery. Originally, face-lifts and chin tucks were both popular methods for eliminating the appearance of a double chin, but liposuction seems to be preferential these days, perhaps because it can now be done quickly and with minimal recovery time and scarring. Facial liposuction is usually performed below the jawline and can give much better results as it minimises the appearance of sagging skin around the neck and jaw area.
The Procedure
The Facial Liposuction procedure is quick and virtually painless, which is why many refer to it as one of the ‘lunch hour’ surgeries available today. Before opting for liposuction, you should consult with your GP and seek out a recommended surgeon who you feel comfortable with. Before the procedure, you should discuss what will happen and the outcome of the chin liposuction, so that you are fully aware and have realistic expectations.
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and can take between 10 and 30 minutes to perform, depending on the individual and the area being treated. The surgeon will use a cannula, which is a slender tube through which the fatty tissue is removed. First, the surgeon will inject the area with a clear substance which limits bruising and bleeding and numbs the area. An incision is made and the cannula inserted so the fat cells can be drained out. Once the desired amount of fat has been removed, the incision is either stitched closed or sealed with a sticky dressing.
Aftercare
After a chin liposuction procedure, your surgeon will expect you to wear a support garment around the chin and face, to aid recovery and protect the area that has had the surgery. Bruising and tenderness may last for several weeks after the surgery, and it is important to treat the chin and jawline with care to prevent any infection. The support garment will be recommended for the first week, and then in subsequent weeks to be worn in the evening. Painkillers will also be offered if desired, and you may wish to take ibuprofen to help with both the inflammation and pain. With most liposuction procedures, the results are instantaneous, but the aftercare is important. Patients should take care not to partake in any activity which may put unnecessary strain on the neck and facial area until fully healed, and once healed should still remain mindful.
Am I a candidate for Facial Liposuction?
Chin liposuction deals with the fat cells around the jawline. It can not remove excess or saggy skin. Doing facial exercises may help reduce fat, and leading a healthy lifestyle should keep your body fat low, reducing the appearance of a double chin. However, if you are within 30% of your ideal body-weight and feel you are plagued with excess fat that you are unable to get rid of, it is worth discussing your options with your GP.
